Minister of Tourism and Culture Jeanie Dendys announced today a 7-member task force to help implement the recently announced 10-year Yukon Tourism Development Strategy.
Newly-appointed members include Yukon First Nation educator Marilyn Jensen, former executive director of Council of Yukon First Nation Michelle Kolla, Northern Vision Development Executive Officer Rich Thompson, and former deputy minister of Tourism and Culture Vicki Hancock.
Dendys says the task force will first explore how a future tourism strategy would be initiated.
"The steering committee recommended that a task force explore tourism governance models such as a crown corporation, a special-operating agency, a private or public sector partnership...and an improved (tourism) model to the Government of Yukon."
Hancock says she's confident the new team can work towards a new tourism model to help attract more visitors to the territory.
"The team that has been selected are open-minded, strong people. They have the same passion and dedication we all have to make sure whatever is brought forward and recommended to the government is solid."
Dendy's says the task force will be provided $50,000 for their first assignment to create a tourism governance model strategy report by this September.
Over $875,000 has been committed towards the Yukon Tourism Development Strategy by the territorial government so far.
