The companies combined their efforts after several of them received requests from the school to cover a sports funding shortfall. The donation also helps teams travel.
Children and youth in the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun received a boost after 11 exploration and mining companies donated $12,500 to J.V. Clark School for athletic programming.
According to a media release, Yukon Chamber of Mines Executive Director Jonas Smith presented the cheque to principal Douglas Cooper during the community’s annual career fair. The funds came from Azarga Metals, Banyan Gold, Cantex Mine Development, Fireweed Metals, Hecla Mining, Metallic Minerals, Silver North, Sitka Gold, Snowline Gold, Trifecta Gold, and TruePoint Exploration.
Smith said the companies combined their efforts after several of them received requests from the school to cover a sports funding shortfall. The donation also helps teams travel.
Following the presentation, the companies hosted a steak dinner at the village community hall for about 200 residents, including Na-Cho Nyäk Dun citizens of all ages.
“I extend my sincere thanks to these companies for combining efforts for the school and community,” Smith said, adding appreciation for residents supporting responsible exploration and mining in the area.
The Yukon Chamber of Mines will host a July 10 golf tournament in Whitehorse to establish a fund for similar youth-focused community requests across the territory.
