Priority 1 trails are normally cleared as close to the surface as possible.
The City of Whitehorse has plowed the Hamilton Boulevard paved trail to asphalt for the spring and summer season, marking the end of year one of a two-year pilot project. The project designated the trail from the Alaska Highway to North Star Drive as a Priority 1 route under the City’s Snow and Ice Control Policy.
According to a media release, priority 1 trails are normally cleared as close to the surface as possible. This winter, the City aimed to maintain a thin, hard-packed layer of snow to serve both pedestrians and cyclists as well as snowmobiles, based on stakeholder input.
City officials thanked the public, trail users, and staff for their patience following a tough start to winter and record snowfall.
The City is now seeking feedback on the pilot. Residents who use the Hamilton Boulevard trail can share their thoughts at engagewhitehorse.ca
