The Whistle Bend Neighbourhood Active Transportation Connector project will receive over $8.7 million to build 5.5km of multi-use pathways and protected bike lanes, connecting downtown Whitehorse to Whistle Bend
The Government of Canada has launched the Build Communities Strong Fund, a $51 billion initiative over 10 years to support infrastructure projects across the country. The fund will focus on hospitals, recreation centers, universities, bridges, water systems, and transit systems.
In Whitehorse, the Whistle Bend Neighbourhood Active Transportation Connector project will receive over $8.7 million to build 5.5km of multi-use pathways and protected bike lanes, connecting downtown Whitehorse to Whistle Bend and Porter Creek neighbourhoods.
"This investment will help build safer, more connected neighbourhoods – strengthening the Yukon and Canada," says Dr. Brendan Hanley, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs.
The project aims to improve traffic safety, support economic growth, and increase housing development in the rapidly growing Whistle Bend residential area. "Increasing active transportation options for our citizens is a priority of Whitehorse City Council," says Mayor Kirk Cameron.
The Build Communities Strong Fund is expected to create 42,000 jobs per year and boost Canada's GDP by $95 billion over the next decade.
