Chief Russell Blackjack emphasizes that no mining activity will be tolerated in this area
The Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation is taking a strong stance against mineral exploration and mining in the Claire Lake region, a vital area within their traditional territory known as the "Breadbasket".
This pristine region is crucial for the First Nation's food security, culture, and treaty rights, providing critical fish and wildlife habitat, settlement lands, traditional trails, and cultural sites.
In a media release, LSCFN Chief Russell Blackjack emphasizes that no mining activity will be tolerated in this area, citing the importance of preserving the land for future generations.
According to the release, the Breadbasket is one of the last untouched areas within LSCFN's territory, and the First Nation has already invested in stewardship efforts, including revitalizing traditional trails and developing environmental monitoring programs.
LSCFN is asserting its right to protect its lands and waters, and warns that any proponents ignoring their directive will face opposition, the release said.
