Honourable Larry Bagnell representing Hon. Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women, announcing funding for a pilot project to boost victims of sexual assault access past legal obstacles.
Advocate Case Review Project
The Yukon is taking steps to address access to responsive legal and justice systems.
The Yukon status of women council is receiving 374,000 dollars for the 36 month project which forms a Yukon Advocate Case Review meant to provide victims of sexual assault and violence help to get justice.
The project is concentrating on on finding the causes for low reporting rate of sexual assaults in Yukon and possible reasons for the high number of reported cases that do not result in charges.
The use of the word "unfounded" by police to classify sexual assaults is one example of how cases don't move through the funnel of procedures needed to bring charges to trial.
The first review will come in January of 2019 and will focus on cases in Watson Lake, Dawson city and Whitehorse.
