This planned closure was as a result of the Government of Yukon’s refusal to move from a fee-for-service model to a yearly contract.
The plan towards closing the Yukon mental health clinic is now on hold.
In November, Yukon psychiatrist Dr. Leo Elwell of Soulshine Health in Whitehorse shared a letter informing his patients of the clinics March 29, 2024 closure with the Yukon Party.
This planned closure was as a result of the Government of Yukon’s refusal to move from a fee-for-service model to a yearly contract.
In a Dec. 12 email, the clinic said they have been in contact with the Yukon government and that they will be conducting a comprehensive review of the clinic’s services in the territory. With is development, the Soulshine Health said it will hold off on its decision, until a meeting set for late January 2024.
According to the email, Dr. Elwell said he is hopeful they will secure a contract after the meeting.
The move from a fee-for-service model to a yearly contract, was a topic for deliberation at the territorial legislature before the fall sitting ended in late November.
