Day two of the legislature began as usual with the introduction of visitors followed by tributes from all parties to International Women's Day and Minister of Community Services John Streicker paying tribute on behalf of all parties to Buckwheat Donahue, who passed away on October 14, 2019 in Oklahoma.
Before moving onto question period as usual, Yukon Party Leader Stacey Hassard stood to ask for unanimous consent to debate an emergency motion calling for a select committee to determine COVID-19 impacts, collect feedback form Yukoners, businesses and subject matter experts, and provide a report with recommendation to the Legislative Assembly before the end of the sitting.
Unanimous support for debating the motion was granted, but after more than an hour of debate the motion was defeated by the majority Liberal Government.
In question period Health concerns and the economic impacts of the spreading coronavirus occupied the debate on both sides of the house. Issues ranged for personal protective equipment, healthcare preparation and preventive measures, Test kits and Airport screen procedures, to budget allocations for the economic fallout of a collapsing Tourism industry and introducing regulations for paid sick leave for people unable to attend work because of the illness.
In response the government repeated the message that the risk is low in Yukon for contracting the coronavirus, there are no international flights scheduled and no screening at the airport currently. The government is closely monitoring other jurisdictions and following the advice of medical experts.
