The first of the evacuees being flown down from Old Crow, arrived Whitehorse on a scheduled Air North flight and an Alkan Air charter. Currently, 66 people in Inuvik are expected to be in Whitehorse as of today.
According to the Emergency Coordination Centre information officer Diana Dryburgh, the Canada Games Centre is set up with sleeping facilities.
Evacuees who had earlier arrived, are staying at Normandy Living and at a Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) building.
KDFN communications manager Dylan MacNeil said sleeping spaces has been set up at the First Nation’s multipurpose building and is keeping its potlatch house open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. offering a sacred burning fire, food, refreshments, counselling and other services.
For donations to assist the evacuees, MacNeil said KDFN is looking for hygiene supplies such as: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, shaving equipment and toothbrushes. Items for babies including diapers, wipes and baby soap and shampoo are also being sought. These items can be dropped off at the Nàkwät’à Kų̀ potlatch house collection centre, located at 27 McIntyre Drive.
