YESAB Wants More Info From YG on Dawson Gravel Project

Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation has concerns with life of project and pay dirt sluicing.

The Yukon government has been granted more time to provide further information regarding its proposed project to use Dawson City area tailings for local gravel.

The Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board has given Highways and Public Works an additional six months to answer questions.

There are mixed feelings from the Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation over the proposal. While they say they support the idea in principal, there are concerns over the government wanting a 50-year time frame.

As well TH says some placer claims could straddle Crown and First Nations land. The First Nation is concerned that pay dirt from settlement land maybe removed and sluiced elsewhere and then returned.

Miners don't own the tailings on public land. YESAB is looking to Highways and Public Works to provide more information on potential impacts to First Nations.
