Watson Lake MLA Wants Equal Treatment for Daycares

Patti McLeod says the Watson Lake Daycare has been closed for months, with little YG Help, yet the closure of Whitehorse daycare in January get immediate government attention.

The MLA for Watson Lake says its disappointing her home community is not receiving the same help that Whitehorse is getting for emergency child care.

In November the daycare in Watson Lake closed, leaving approximately a dozen families searching for alternative care.

Patti McLeod says to her knowledge that Watson Lake Daycare has gotten little help, while parents affected by the Cheeky Monkey closure in Whitehorse had a high level of government assistance within days.

McLeod says the government should honour its campaign slogan of all community's matter.

"They have said repeatedly that all communities matter. It’s becoming clear that some communities matter more than others."

McLeod says she is pleased to see the Whitehorse parents receiving help.

The government has offered increased child care subsidy to Cheeky Monkey parents in getting a second spot for January and has called around to other daycares to inquire about openings.

McLeod says the Watson Lake daycare will not open in January, rather that being pushed to the spring.
