Five Gwitch'in storytellers will be at the event taking place at the Old Community Hall at six pm. The stories will be told in both Gwich'in and English.

A Gwich'in storytelling event is quickly occurring this Thursday at 6pm at the Old Community Hall in Old Crow.

Titled  "Forward Together: Vuntut Gwitchin Stories", Co- Founder of Gwanduuk Theatre Patti Flather say there has been quite a buildup leading up to the storytelling event.

"We are developing theater stories adapted from both long ago and contemporary Gwich'in stories. This week, we are recording some as radio plays and we are also going to share some of the excerpts in a public reading on Thursday at the community hall, of course with a feast as well."

Flather says stories will be told in both Gwich'in and English and that there will be a story for everyone at the event.

"We're working with some really beautiful and powerful stories. These include original stories as told by Sarah Able, Steven Frost and his story about his first snow machine. Sarah Able's stories are about women and a bushman who survived an (Old Crow) winter and kept others from starving".

Flather says one of the hopes of the storytelling event is to promote more storytelling between older and younger generations, including the telling of stories in the Gwich'in Language.

Flather says while the event is quickly approaching, editing the stories to make them audible over radio will take a few months.

"We are hoping hey can be broadcasted on radio stations as well as to make it possible for people to hear (the stories) in classrooms. It's all audio, so a full story has to be told in a way the listener can figure it out. Besides peoples' voices, we are also putting in great sound effects such as snoring, the sound of the raven or the sound of Steven Frost's snow machine breaking down. It's really a fun way of telling a story."

The community of Old Crow is situated along the banks of the Porcupine River in Yukon and just over 200 residents live in the community.
