Nunavut's Department of Education is scrambling to find students for the upcoming school year.
Almost 60 teaching positions remain open in Nunavut for the upcoming school year. These include 19 second-language teachers, and 19 Inuktitut and culture teachers. In a worst-case scenario, the school year could be delayed in six different communities.
Teachers typically need a Bachelor of Education to teach in Canada, however communities such as Arctic Bay, Igloolik and Kimmirut are exempting applicants from this requirement.
Nunavut's Department of Education note possible solutions include hiring non-teaching staff, which could include principals or support staff, or even combining grades.
Davis Joanasie, Nunavut's education minister, states their still in recruitment mode but are still confident on filling the positions as last-minute hires are being made.
In Nunavut, schools will be opening their doors on August 27th.
