The Swearing in Ceremony for Madam Justice Suzanne M. Duncan occurred yesterday at Yukon Courts.
Suzanne Duncan has officially been sworn-in as Yukon's newest supreme court justice.
Duncan began her legal career in Toronto over thirty years ago, and her most recent position included working legal counsel for the Kwanlin Dun First Nation.
Kwanlin Dun First Nation Chief Dorris Bill, a spokesperson at the Swearing in Ceremony, said Duncan had a long lasting impact during her time working there.
"You left us in a better place. Suzanne helped Kwanlin Dun make history. As the first self-governing First Nation to register settlement land at the Yukon Land Titles Office, it was not an easy feat. We could not have achieved this new height without you."
Duncan has worked in Whitehorse since 2006 and her other role included serving as executive of the Law Society of Yukon in the territory.
Duncan says she'll work hard to gain public trust as a judge in in her new role.
"I hope my commitment, service, accountability, understanding and constant self-evaluation will provide at least some counterbalance to the inevitable mistakes that I'll be making. I'm still in awe of the enormity of the responsibility I'm assuming. Please note I'll be working hard to earn public trust and be deserving of this great privilege. Thank you again for coming today."
Duncan was called to the new position late last year following the passing of Yukon Judge Leigh Gower.
