The Government of Yukon is temporarily indexing residential rent increases in the territory to inflation.
Starting tomorrow landlords will only be able to increase residential rent by one per cent.
The Government of Yukon is temporarily indexing residential rent increases in the territory to inflation as part of policy under the Confidence and Supply Agreement signed by the Liberals and the NDP.
A one per cent increase is the Consumer Prince Index for Whitehorse for 2020.
If a landlord gave notice of a rent increase that takes effect after May 15, they can still up the rent but limited to one per cent. If the landlord chooses to proceed with a rent increase after May 15, they will have to give their tenant a separate notice of the one percent increase.
The government will review the rent increase percentage each year after the Consumer Price Index is published.
The indexing will be in effect until May 14, 2022.
