The Government of Yukon has announced a new site for the new École Whitehorse Elementary School.
École Whitehorse Elementary School originally built in 1950 was identified in 2022 as top priority to be replaced with a new, modern facility that will meet the needs of the community for years to come.
The 72 years old building is the oldest school building in Whitehorse. According to the Yukon government, a new building, in addition to providing a welcoming, modern learning environment for students, will have significantly better energy performance and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions
On Tuesday October 1, the Government of Yukon announced that the new École Whitehorse Elementary School will be built at the northwest corner of the Takhini Educational Land Reserve.
As per a government release, the project aligns with the Government of Yukon's commitment to modern, state-of-the-art educational facilities that meet community needs and environmental standards.
The new school site which overlaps with two existing softball fields used by Softball Yukon for programming, league play and tournaments, offers numerous advantages, including improved sports facilities, minimal impact on existing school operations and better traffic management, the release added.
