Silver's Public Service pledge is in contradiction of Yukoner's concerns the government's growth and size. 25% of of the population works in some level of government.
Despite Yukoners great concern over the growth and size of the government, Finance Minister Sandy Silver is committing that the civil services will not see layoffs. He also put an end to any speculation that a harmonized sales tax will be implemented.
Silver pledged to conduct a health care review, but not an overall comprehensive efficiencies review within the government. The Financial Advisory Panel noted that one quarter of the population works in the public sector and recommends the government examine duplications. The civil service and health care are the government's two major expenditures.
Yukon Party MLA Brad Cathers says the report confirms that the government does not need to cut services or raise fees to balance the budget, but rather reduce government spending.
