Premier Sandy Silver sets date for territorial election
Yukoners will be heading to the polls on April 12
Premier Sandy Silver announced the election this afternoon in a press conference.
“We have supported and kept Yukoners safe through a global pandemic. We have the best economy in Canada and we have dramatically improved relations with Yukon First Nation governments,” says Silver. “We are at a crossroads. Now it will be up to voters to decide what path they want to go down.”
Silver will be up against Yukon Party leader Currie Dixon and NDP leader Kate White.
The Yukon Party and the NDP both held press conferences reacting to the announcement.
Currie Dixon says his diverse team will give his party an edge.
“We’ve got an incredibly diverse and experienced team, so I think that the Yukon Party team, some of whom are here with us today, are going to be our biggest strength leading into the election. I think we’ve got a really good mix of experience, of folks who have been in the legislature, been in cabinet, and new people who have come to the party to add new fresh ideas and new ways of thinking to the party” says Dixon
Kate white says, if she is elected Premier of the territory, she will follow through on her promises.
“I intend to be the kind of premier who does what she says she’ll do and as premier I’m going to make life more affordable for people by covering the cost of dental care and prescription drugs for those who don’t have private coverage. And I’m going to make life for the lowest paid among us a little easier, by raising the minimum wage. And I’ll take action on the mental health crisis hitting young people, by creating a walk in and phone in clinic for mental health services” says White
White will hold a telephone town hall on Monday while Currie Dixon will launch the Yukon Party’s campaign Action for a Change.
