Newest Mammography Technology now at Whitehorse General Hospital

WGH is now home to the latest mammography technology called tomosynthesis which creates a three-dimensional image as the machine moves in an arc over the breast.

Led by tremendous local efforts and generosity of Yukoners, including Run for Mom and Yukon Hospital Foundation, the territory now has the newest mammography technology at Whitehorse General Hospital. This ensures we can continue to offer the community the very best breast health care closer to home.

WGH is now home to the latest mammography technology called tomosynthesis which creates a three-dimensional image as the machine moves in an arc over the breast. This gives the hospital team a more efficient and effective screening and diagnostic tool, which will allows for even earlier (and more accurate) detection of smaller breast cancers. We also anticipate that this more advanced technology will reduce the need for follow up images in many patients, especially those with denser breast tissue.

The nearly $1 million mammography replacement project includes not only the new equipment, but also upgrades to our I.T. infrastructure, and renovations to our mammography exam suite.

Nearly all of the funds were made possible by Run for Mom, a long-standing Yukon-based walk/run event held each Mother’s Day. This is now the third mammography unit that the event has supported along with many community-based breast health initiatives, programs and groups. The Yukon Hospital Foundation was also instrumental in helping to secure the new unit, continuing its support of significant investments in equipment such as MRI, CT and the clinical simulation centre to name a few.

“More and more Yukoners each year are now able to receive critical (and often life-saving) breast screenings and diagnostics right here in the territory because of support from our partners and the community at large. On behalf of the entire team, we cannot express our thanks enough for what this investment allows us to do,” says Yukon Hospitals’ CEO Jason Bilsky. “We are quite fortunate to have a great team delivering an exceptional level of service, supported by advanced technology.”
