Part of the approach is to bring families together on an annual basis is within the strategy and implementation plan
The Yukon Advisory Committee on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, & Two-Spirit+ (MMIWG2S+), established in 2015, is scheduled to release its first Annual Accountability Report into the implementation of the 2023-2038 strategic plan this fall.
Providing annual Accountability Reports to the community is one of the 12 priority areas of the Implementation Plan.
In an interview with CHON-FM, Deputy Premier Jeanie McLean, the Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate, and Co-chair of the Yukon Advisory Committee, said the annual report is a mechanism to have conversations about the work being done.
"Part of the approach is to bring families together on an annual basis is within the strategy and implementation plan so that we can report back to them and report back to each other around what is happening,” said McLean.
Safety assessments and plans in every Yukon community is part of the strategy. These are being done now, she said.
“The government of Yukon has committed $200,000 per community for that work to happen."
Expansion of the sexual assault and violence program into rural communities is also being done, she said.
The Yukon Advisory Committee on MMIWG2S+ has three co-chairs: Ann Maje Raider, Doris Bill and Minister Mclean, representing First Nations women's organizations, Yukon First Nations women, and the Government of Yukon, respectively. Bill and Maje Raider were not available for comment.
In June 2023, the Yukon Advisory Committee on MMIWG2S+ released the Implementation Plan intended to activate Yukon's Strategy on MMIWG2S+.
In 2022, the Yukon Advisory Committee released its MMIWG2S+ Strategy with 12 priority action items representing the most critical areas.
