Indigenous Governance Degree Program Starts at Yukon College

The main Yukon College campus is located in Whitehorse.

The degree will take approximately three years for students to complete.

The Indigenous Governance degree program launched on September 4th at Yukon College.     

The program consists of 90 credits, and the degree was built upon the foundation of the First Nations Governance and Public Administration certificate.

Language preservation and Indigenous political thinking are just some of the topics the degree program explores.

Course delivery is varied and includes a variety of lectures, seminars, group discussions, presentations and guest speakers.

There are 15 students registered in the program with overall enrollment of people being First Nations themselves.       

Enrollment at the college has increased 15 percent since 2017, with 769 people enrolled at the program this year in comparison to 665 people registered last year.   

Yukon College notes enrollments figures could climb with 20 student applications pending.      

The diploma and degree program is a joint initiative between Yukon First Nations, Yukon College and Yukon Government.

The degree program is the first degree program of its kind in the territories.
