Holiday Roadside Police Checks

Officers continue to emphasize to drivers that the screening is in place to make the roads safer for everyone, including those being asked to provide mandatory breath samples.

The RCMP have released a report on their holiday season traffic stops.

In it, they reaffirm that impaired driving is always a priority, and between Dec 1st and New Years day, officers performed road-side checks on 325 vehicles.

Police officers since mid-December can demand a mandatory breath sample from any driver that has been lawfully stopped in Canada.

9 impaired drivers were charged with driving under the influence as well as one impaired causing bodily harm while 2 people refused the road side test.

There were cases of failing to stop at the scene of a collision, 6 cases of prohibited drivers, 5 intersection related offences and 11 speeding incidents.

There was one fine given for improper usage of seatbelts, 10 24-hour suspensions of licenses and 2 drivers fined for driving without insurance.

One driver was charged with dangerous driving and another brazen driver who tried to escape the cops.
