Pauline Frost says YG was able to help Whitehorse's Cheeky Monkey's parents as there were more daycares available. The Watson Lake daycare has been closed for months.
Health and Social Services Minister Pauline Frost is defending the governments response to the closure of the Cheeky Monkey's Daycare in Whitehorse. Last week, Watson Lake MLA Patti McLeod raised her concerns about the daycare situation in the territory.
She noted that the Watson Lake daycare has been closed for months, with little government help, while parents of Cheeky Monkey's children received significant assistance within days.
Frost says in a statement through a Cabinet spokesperson that government staff were able to assist because there are other daycares available in Whitehorse, including re-routing subsidies intended for Cheeky Monkeys to the new, licensed childcare provider.
Frost says the government continues to provide the Watson Lake daycare operator with a direct operating grant so that when they are able to staff their facility they can reopen.
\McLeod says the Watson Lake daycare may reopen in the spring. She adds the discrepancy in help between the two communities, with Whitehorse getting more, suggests that not all communities matter, which was a campaign slogan of the Liberals.
