FH Collins students and staff are back to school today following a fire that forced the evacuation of the building last Friday afternoon.

Staff and Students at F.H. Collins are back to school today following a fire that forced the evacuation of the building last Friday.

Yukon Department of Education Communications Analyst Kyle Nightingale says tests conducted by officials over the weekend have deemed most of the school safe to return to.

"Just to ensure the school was safe for students and staff to return to the school,   we conducted some air quality testing and the results have indicated that the building is safe. The school is open today."

Nightingale says a small portion of the school will remained closed until further notice.

"So the computer room where the incident took  place will remain closed until further notice. Any class programming that will require the use of a computer will be done using some of the devices (currently) available to the school."

Nightingale says he's thankful of everyone who got the children and staff back to school in such a short period of time.

"I would just say thank you to the maintenance and custodial staff and the fired department for responding to this situation very quickly and ensuring that students and staff could return to the school as soon as possible."

Nightingale says the cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Whitehorse Fire Department.

A fire near Elijah Smith Elementary School was also sparked just this past August in Whitehorse.
