Ta'an Kwatch'an council, Kwanlin Dun First Nation andthe City of Whitehorse signed the declaration yesterday at a ceremony
Declaration of Commitment
Kwanlin Dun First Nation Chief Doris Bill,Ta'an Kwatch'an Council Chief Kristina Kane and Mayor Dan Curtis, signed a declaration of commitment. The first urban-based modern day treaty of it's kind in Canada.
It reflects on commitments brought forward by the 94 calls to action from the truth and reconciliation commission. They collectively aim to strengthen their partnership to benefit the community as a whole, to respect the native languages of the region and to share expertise, knowledge and resources.
In a symbolic showing of partnership, Whitehorse by-law and the respective Chiefs raised flags of their First Nations in front of City Hall to fly alongside the Canadian Flag.
