The closure is intended to prevent accidents and injuries that could occur due to the unstable terrain.
The City of Whitehorse has temporarily closed sections of the East Airport Access Road Trail, including small connector trails, due to localized erosion caused by spring snow melt.
This closure is part of the City's ongoing monitoring of the escarpment during spring freshet, a period of high-water flow and potential erosion.
While the Black Street stairs remain open, providing an alternative route for pedestrians, the City of Whitehorse has made the decision to close the trails to keep trail users safe. The closure is intended to prevent accidents and injuries that could occur due to the unstable terrain.
As per a media release, the City of Whitehorse is actively monitoring the escarpment using various measures, including: slope scanner, regular engineering inspections, and drone surveys
Changes in trail status and traffic flow may be altered as monitoring continues. For updates and information, residents can visit engagewhitehorse.ca/escarpment-2025
The City of Whitehorse will provide regular updates on the status of the trail and any changes that may occur.
The closure of the trail is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of trail users.
