A scam is being perpetrated in which a person posing as a Service Canada employee asks for personal information. The scam involves a claim that the person being called has had their social insurance number linked to an arrest warrant.
It seems a new (or old) scam is making the rounds. People receive calls from a Private Number. Upon answering the call, a recorded message claims that their social insurance number has been linked to a warrant issued for their arrest. The person called is then asked to press 1 for details. In one case, a woman with a foreign accent came on the phone and asked for the potential victim's name and postal code. They also claimed the call was being recorded and would be forwarded to the Canadian Revenue Agency, the National Crime Unit, etc. The call was disconnected during that phase of the call.
CHON-FM contacted the RCMP, who advised the call was indeed a scam. They recommended calling the Canadian anti-fraud line at 1-888-495-8501 to report the call.
RCMP also agreed that the best course of action is to hang up when receiving a call like this.
