Allen was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, where he later died on Wednesday.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service has confirmed the death of one in a fire outbreak incident on Saturday.
On Wednesday, 74-year-old long-time Yukoner Jacques Joseph Allen was confirmed dead as a result of injuries sustained due to the fire incident.
Chief coroner of Yukon Coroner’s Service Heather Jones said on January 28th, just before midnight, the Whitehorse Fire Department and 911 services were notified of smoke alarms ringing in one of the apartments located at 1190 Front Street, a building owned by Yukon Housing Corporation. The alarm was coming from the second floor, and by the time the fire department arrived, the hallway was filled with smoke.
The fire was sourced to one apartment, where fire-suppression devices were successful in limiting the damage to a small part of the living area.
Allen, the lone occupant of the apartment, was found to have suffered significant injuries due to the fire, the coroner’s office said.
Allen was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, where he later died on Wednesday.
While an autopsy will be conducted in Abbotsford, B.C., next Tuesday, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
According to the coroner’s office, no further details will be released at this time however, the Yukon Coroner’s Service will continue to investigate the fire incident along with the RCMP and the Whitehorse Fire Department.
