The podcast is receiving funding through the Arramat Project for its first year.

Two Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizens have started a podcast to share stories with their community.

Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizens and avid podcast listeners Claire Neilson and Alysha Van Bibber often spoke about starting their own podcast.

Last summer, thanks to funding through the Arramat Project, they were able to start recording and editing content for their own Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in podcast, titled Nits’̀ät Nidäzhùr Hè Ä’tr’ënëtl’ù’ – We Sew Our Blanket With Our Voices.

Speaking with CHON-FM, Van Bibber says that she and Neilson wanted the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in podcast to have more of a traditional storytelling feel.

“Something that we want the podcast to emulate is when we go to beading circles or times with Elders where it is just people sitting around,” said Van Bibber. “And, because they’re doing something and they’re busy, they’re able to talk a little bit more or want to talk a little bit more.”

Both Neilson and Van Bibber said that they received overwhelming support from organizations in Dawson City, including advice from another local podcast, as well as offers for training in audio editing and even recording space.

While hesitant to spoil future episodes of the podcast, Neilson was willing to share that she and Van Bibber would be out in the community with other Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizens.

“I think our biggest thing was to just go where citizens are at, because that’s where, I think, you’re going to get the best stories,” said Neilson. “The most authentic ones to what citizens actually want to talk about. And, probably, what they would be interested in hearing about.”

Neilson and Van Bibber were on-site at Moosehide this past summer to record for the podcast, and return to Dawson City for open recording sessions next week.
