As of October 1, volunteers will receive $30.74 per hour, up from $22, for their time spent on calls and training. This adjustment will benefit volunteers serving in Carcross, Golden Horn, Hootalinqua, Ibex Valley, Klondike Valley, Marsh Lake, Mount Lorne, Tagish, Burwash Landing, and communities with scene safety response units.
Kiara Adams, Yukon's fire marshal, emphasized the value of volunteers, stating that the fire service relies heavily on their dedication.
Fire Chiefs Warren Zakus and John Smith welcomed the increase, citing its impact on retention, but also highlighted the need for further support, particularly funding for the fire marshal's office.
