Publisher announces the closure three months after launch.
For the second time in six months, a Yukon newspaper is closing its doors.
In a news release late Sunday afternoon, Yukon Star publisher Max Fraser announced that the paper is suspending operations immediately due to insufficient revenues and working capital.
As a result of the closure, Yukon Star staff are being let go. In the release, Fraser praises them as talented individuals with over a century of combined journalistic experience, and wishes them luck in finding gainful local employment.
Fraser called the decision to stop publication regrettable, but unavoidable. He said that the long-term outlook was promising, but the short-term need for revenue was not being met.
The release goes on to say that the paper’s finances will be settled in the coming weeks, and that outstanding business will be completed by email, phone, or in person.
The Yukon Star launched in May, publishing online daily and in print weekly following the closure of the Whitehorse Star. According to the release, its last day of publication was Friday, August 23.
