The survey will collect input on topics such as location preferences, educational resources, and facility needs.
The Government of Yukon is inviting Whitehorse residents to share their thoughts on the potential need and possible locations for a new downtown public school.
To gather feedback, the government has launched a short online survey, which takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. The survey will collect input on topics such as location preferences, educational resources, and facility needs. The deadline to complete the survey is June 15, 2025.
In addition to the online survey, the government will host two drop-in public engagement sessions:
- May 29, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm at the Old Fire Hall (1105 Front Street)
- May 31, 2025, from 1 to 3 pm at the Francophone Centre (302 Strickland Street)
These sessions will provide an opportunity for residents to learn more, ask questions, and share their perspectives in person.
Minister of Education Jeanie McLean emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of downtown Whitehorse. "With a growing population, planning for modern, well-equipped educational facilities remains a priority."
According to a media release, the Government of Yukon has allocated $50,000 in Budget 2025-26 for the first round of public engagement.
In related news, the Government of Yukon is continuing discussions with the community about the new École Whitehorse Elementary School. A public engagement session was held on April 10, 2025. The school is planned to be built at the northwest corner of the Takhini Education Land Reserve.
