There have been 12 confirmed drug-related deaths in the territory since January. Most of them involved opioids, fentanyl, or both.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service has announced that it is investigating six deaths as the result of toxic illicit drugs.
In a media release late last week, the coroner’s office said that four of the deaths occurred between September 23 and October 4. It also said it is investigating two other deaths from the same time period that are suspected of involving toxic substances.
According to the release, each of the four confirmed cases involved cocaine use, and three also involved fentanyl.
The release says that the cases involved in this investigation do not appear to be linked to each other.
Since January, the Yukon Coroner’s Service has confirmed 12 substance use deaths. 11 involved opioids, 10 involved fentanyl, and all but one of the deaths occurred in Whitehorse.
The release goes on to share contact information for resources such as Blood Ties Four Directions, the Outreach Van and Emergency Medical Services.
