Yukon College students were invited to Ottawa this week to showcase their innovative projects as part of the Colleges and Institutes Canada event called CICan on the Hill
The Student Showcase took place Feb 26 and 27th, at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The event is an opportunity for students to engage with parliamentarians and senior federal officials and share perspectives on how colleges and institutes support skills development and innovation in communities across Canada.
Ira Mamis is a Yukon college student who was selected along with her classmate to present their project on mental health in the north. Ira said it started off as just a small idea, which took them all the way to Ottawa in a matter of a few weeks. Ira said her experience really demonstrated that no idea is too small.
Jagger Jaimeson is also a Yukon college student who co-presented with Ms. Manis. Their project at the event showcased a camp fire and tea as a mental wellness alternative to visiting a psychiatrist. Jagger is Champagne and Aishihik First Nations. He said it's important for him to incorporate his traditional values into his studies believes the most important thing for maintaining good mental health is to know what your home is like. You cannot feel 'at home' if you don't know what that is, he said.
The Student Showcase featured innovative projects or initiatives in applied research, social innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, reconciliation and inclusion.
CICan on the Hill event participants, including students, were welcome to join in organised meetings with parliamentarians and senior government officials on the second day of the event.
