In the Yukon Legislative Assembly this week, a new healthcare facility is to be built in Old Crow, Aboriginal Languages Day is on Sunday, and mining, housing and Social Services dominated question period.
Question Period Summary – Week 03
The third week in the Legislature wrapped up on Thursday with the announcement of a new health care facility to be built in Old Crow. The project will start in 2020 after land availability for the facility is confirmed. The new facility will also support accommodation for visiting dentists and therapists. A winter road is planned for the project.
On Monday, MLAs paid tribute to National Social Work Month and on Wednesday the government announced $30 million dollars in funding for schools in Yukon’s education system. On Thursday the legislature paid tribute to Aboriginal Languages Day, which happens on Sunday.
Health and Social Services and mining dominated debate in question period this week. Housing and Solid Waste Management were also discussed.
One question that was directed at Minister of Health and Social Services Pauline Frost this week was about the availability of detox beds at the Sarah Steele Facility.
Frost explained the improvements that have resulted from new partnerships and realigned services. The question about a waiting list for detox beds however was not addressed.
