The Yukon Party says they do not consider the matter closed.
Education Minister Jeanie McLean spoke to CHONFM this morning, regarding the fact that parents of kids at Hidden Valley Elementary school are appalled at the lack of communication from the government about an Educational Assistant that was convicted of sexual interference with a child.
McLean says she has responded to letters from parents and MLA Brad Cathers, whose riding includes Hidden Valley. She says she needed to take time to ensure that she had accurate information about the incident.
The Yukon Party, which Cathers belongs to, tells CHONFM that they feel the letter they got from McLean in response dismisses the concerns of parents and doesn’t answer their questions. They say they will be sending another letter, and do not consider the matter closed.
CHONFM asked Minister McLean why parents didn’t hear about this situation from the government and why they had to learn about it in the local news. McLean says she can’t comment on the situation in detail because there is an active investigation, and the matter is before the courts.
“Would I like to sit down and speak to every single parent? Yes, I would. It’s really difficult to not be able to communicate in the I normally would,” says McLean.
Earlier this week, the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate Office launched a systematic review of school safety and supports at Hidden Valley Elementary School.
