The amendment reflects the government's commitment to strengthening frontline healthcare and improving health outcomes, as promised in the 2025 election
Bill No. 5, amending the Health Authority Act, has been passed by the Yukon Legislative Assembly, despite concerns from Yukon First Nations.
Yukon's Minister of Health and Social Services, Brad Cathers, said the amendment reflects the government's commitment to strengthening frontline healthcare and improving health outcomes, as promised in the 2025 election. “The amendment provides time to work with partners, including Yukon First Nations, to determine the best path forward for the territory's health system,” he said.
According to a media release, the government will focus on urgent needs, such as strengthening frontline care, supporting hospitals, and improving health outcomes.
The amendment removes transition requirements in the current Act, allowing the government to pause or change course without legislative amendments.
This move has been met with criticism from the Chiefs Committee on Health, who condemn the decision as opposing the position of Yukon First Nations
