Alumni, students and instructors will be gathering at Yukon College on Friday to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the start of the Yukon Native Teacher Education Program.
Program Faculty Advisor Brian Lewthwaite says the program has helped dozens of graduates in the program provide better cultural immersion and understanding of historical colonization to their students, which currently has 27 people enrolled in the four-year program.
While the program initially only allowed those of First Nations ancestry to enter the program, Lewthwaite says non-Indigenous students have also been able to enroll in the program in recent years.
Lewthwaite says the program has shown to be a success as well in the territory, with the majority of Yukon's 32 schools now being represented by at least one of their program's graduates.
All alumni are welcome to attend the event on Friday, which commences at 6:00 pm at the Ayamdigut campus.
