Education Minister Scott Kent apologized to families and students for the unnecessary stress and anxiety caused by the inaccurate notice.
Parents were told yesterday that school buses had been cancelled, but the Yukon Department of Education says that information was wrong.
The department issued a correction Thursday morning after a message about cancellations due to extreme cold was circulated.
In a media release, Education Minister Scott Kent apologized to families and students for the unnecessary stress and anxiety caused by the inaccurate notice.
“Let me be clear: schools will remain open during cold weather, and school buses will continue to provide safe and reliable transportation for students,” Kent said.
He acknowledged a recent spike in cancellations and said the ministry is working with Standard Bus to improve notification timing and overall service reliability, including direct outreach to the company’s president. The correction comes as the territory braces for record-low temperatures, with wind chills forecast to reach near ‑45 °C.
The extreme cold has also prompted Yukon Energy to ask residents to cut back on electricity use during peak hours to avoid further outages in the Whistle Bend area.
