With a placer claim set to expire in September, YG is prohibiting future staking to maintain integrity of reclamation of Venus mine.
Future mineral staking at a now defunct tailing mine site south of Carcross will be prohibited.
Last Thursday the government quietly enacted the new rule, saying it wanted to maintain the integrity of the remediated Venus mine.
The mine was active in exploration and mining for roughly 80 years, closing in the 1980's.
The federal government finished remediation in 1995.
Sue Thomas, Communications Analyst with Energy Mines and Resources says the site's ground water has been sealed off as there are high levels of arsenic.
She says there is currently one placer claim on the tailings, set to expire next week and a quartz claim in the area. She says if the claim is not renewed by the current holder, any new claims will be denied.
The mine site located 22 kilometers south of Carcross near the Conrad campground, was mainly a gold and silver mine.
