Yukon Hospitals says that a systemic review of the situation is underway.
Whitehorse General Hospital cancelled surgeries this week due to a concern with its sterilizing equipment.
In a social media post on Monday, Yukon Hospitals announced that Whitehorse General Hospital was unable to clean its surgical instruments, and decided to cancel scheduled surgeries planned for Monday and Tuesday after noticing a film or residue on surgical instruments after cleaning.
In updates to the original post, Yukon Hospitals announced that the issue had not yet been resolved, and scheduled surgeries were cancelled for the remainder of the week.
According to the posts, properly sterilized instruments are being conserved to respond to emergencies, and the team at Whitehorse General Hospital are focused on adding to its capacity and restore full support for all services.
In an e-mail statement on Friday, Yukon Hospitals Communications Manager Jessica Apolloni said that Whitehorse General Hospital had restored its ability to perform scope procedures and added redundancy to its emergency supply, partly through a partnership with Vancouver General Hospital.
Apolloni went on to say that the cause of the issue has not yet been identified.
Yukon Hospitals apologized for the impact of the cancellations, and said that planned surgeries will be rescheduled as soon as possible.
