A tiny house initiative got underway today with the help of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, the Government of Yukon, and the Government of Canada.
First Nations Chief Steve Smith, the Honourable John Streicker, and Minister Responsible for Yukon Housing Corporation Pauline Frost were all in attendance at the Tiny House Project unveiling on Champagne and Aishihik First Nations traditional territory today.
Between 50-60 people turned up to the event which occurred at Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction), and ten one-bedroom homes are built with the help of local workers.
Yukon College is also providing a 21-week carpentry course for the builders which is being funded by federal and local governments.
The Dän Ts’änãnän program is also heavily involved in the 41-month long project, and the 7.5 millions dollar project is also being funded in partnership from the Government of Canada’s Skills Partnership Fund.
The Dän Ts’änãnän program will provide employment training and opportunities for 250 community members as people by 2021.
Frost notes the tiny house initiatives is currently being looked at in other Yukon communities as well.
