According to the Yukon Liquor Corporation, cannabis license applications could be available as soon as later next month.
After recently being appointed, members of the Cannabis Licensing Board will begin orientation and training around cannabis regulation in early February.
According to Yukon Liquor Corporation Policy and Planning Manager Patch Groenewegen, one of the roles of the newly-appointed Cannabis Licensing board will be to accept or deny cannabis licensing application package, and Groenewegen says a a successful package will be based on the number and type of licenses already in a given area and the economic benefits that retail businesses will give to a community around cannabis sales.
Other requirements towards a successful package include the financial character and legal history of the applicant, views salespeople hold toward cannabis sales, and whether the cannabis retail location is sanitary and secure enough to sell cannabis.
If a businesses doesn't follow government regulations, the board also has the power to impose sanctions on license holders.
It's not clear when exactly the first cannabis store will pop up in the Whitehorse area, however Minister responsible for the Liquor Corporation John Streicker says the government-run Cannabis Yukon store doesn't plan on competing with private businesses selling cannabis as the store shuts down later this year.
