President Francyne Joe hopes new ED not a lawyer
At least one Aboriginal group hopes yet another resignation will revitalize the leadership of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
The inquiry's executive director Michele Moreau is stepping down later this month for personal reasons -- the latest departure of inquiry executives and staff -- and the Native Women's Association of Canada says it creates the possibility for renewal as hearings move forward.
Association president Francyne Joe says Moreau's replacement should be two-spirited, transgender or a woman with Indigenous ties but, above all, should be well organized, able to communicate on a normal, one-to-one basis with families -- and not another lawyer.
Joe says the position should be filled by September, but a date for the hiring of a new executive director has not been announced.
