The Indigenous Summer Play Readings for 2020 return online, with a special pivotal event "Holding Space" on June 18th and 19th 2020.
On June 18th at 6pm, "Holding Space" is an evening of art and discussion. This curated evening will provide audiences with a nourishing opportunity to hear Black, Indigenous, and Mixed speakers, artists, and drag monarchs. Running approximately 2 hours, this experience is still being collectively formed by the selected participants.
Artistic Director Colin Wolf said in a statement, "We are honoured to welcome this dynamic group of individuals to share their unique experiences, especially as we reflect on the ongoing discrimination against Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour. We will punctuate our speakers stories using performance, poetry, and drag to emphasize this journey of sharing, reflection, and hopeful action.
On June 19th at 7pm, enjoy a Play Reading called "Dominion" by Andréa Ledding.
"Dominion" is a five-person play revolving around two couples: Jack and Marie-Phillipe, who occupy a new home, and Tatawaw and Nimitaw, previous owners of the home, who are now locked up in the bathroom. An exploration of relationships and Canada's history, sparse with humour.
Playwright Andréa Ledding said in a statement, "Dominion is a play about all of us. It originated with a quote from Elder Mike Pinay, who has now walked on, at the IRS 2008 Televised Apology at White Buffalo Youth Lodge on 20th Street in Saskatoon, where he talked about how "Canadian history was like being locked in the bathroom of your own home by your visitors."
