While many people are still reeling with the cancellation of the 2020 Arctic winter Games preliminary figures are in on what the games would have contributed to the Yukon economy... the number is $5.7 million to, according to a recently completed economic impact assessment.
The Whitehorse based games were cancelled literally at the last minute because of the COVID-19 virus and pandemic.
Moira Lassen General manger of the games says she wasn't really surprised at the numbers.
The report also states with the anticipated expenditures made by the Host Society the games, would have supported just under 10 million of overall economic activity in the territory, most of it just over 9 million in Whitehorse.
The AWG 2020 Host Society partnered with the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) and the Yukon Government Department of Economic Development to complete the report, through CSTA’s Steam Pro 2.0 model.
The 2020 Arctic Winter Games would have been held March 15 to 21 in Whitehorse, but were cancelled on March 7 due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
