Strand's victory is seen as a significant win for the community, particularly given her Indigenous heritage, as she becomes the first Indigenous mayor of Haines Junction.
Diane Strand has emerged as the winner of the Haines Junction mayoral byelection, securing 137 votes.
Strand, a former councillor and chief of Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, defeated Brian Melanson, who garnered 110 votes.
A total of 99 ballots were deemed "unused or spoiled."
The byelection was called after former mayor Michael Riseborough resigned in November due to health issues related to workplace stress. Riseborough had been elected just a few months prior in October, defeating Melanson and another candidate.
Strand's victory is seen as a significant win for the community, particularly given her Indigenous heritage, as she becomes the first Indigenous mayor of Haines Junction.
During her campaign, Strand emphasized the importance of having an Indigenous voice in municipal government, stating that it could help bridge misunderstandings and benefit the community.
As mayor, Strand will bring her leadership experience and knowledge of the community to the role. Her win is expected to be confirmed in the coming days.
