Council of Yukon First Nation Grand Chief Peter Johnston says he's excited to be acclaimed to a second three-year term in his current position.
Grand Chief Johnston says there was a sense of relief when he found out the next about the acclamation.
Yes, It's great. It's a sense of relief for sure. Obviously elections aren't the most positive experiences we find ourselves from time to time, but at the end of the day, I'm glad to be able to continue working on the meaningful things we've been able to do. It's great to be involved at this time during our history as First Nations people."
Grand Chief Johnston says his main focus now is to work closely with Yukon First Nation and other governments to continue working on the issues important to everyone.
"At the end of the day, I just want to take it with a grain of salt. I hope that we can build on the successes we've had over the last three years. I think that there's a lot of important things to recognize. Working together really builds on the focus of what we should be doing in the territory. W're stronger when we work together. Coming out of the Yukon Forum, there's a re-connection of that."
On top of bringing Yukon First Nation governments together, Grand Chief Johnston says work continued development of the Yukon Native Language Centre and a permanent home for the Council of Yukon First Nation facility are other priorities he says he'll be working on in his next term.
