The City of Whitehorse and the Whitehorse Fire Department would like to remind its residents and visitors that no open burning of any kind is allowed within the City of Whitehorse from April 1st to September 30th, except for cooking fires.
If you plan on having an open fire on your property or in a designated area for the purpose of cooking food, keep in mind the following requirements:
- must use propane, charcoal or clean wood as the fuel
- source containers must be non-combustible and no larger than one-meter square
- flame height can be no higher than .5 meters
- container shall be at least 3 meters from any building or structure
- must be supervised by an adult at all times
Even cooking fires can get out of control if used in unfavourable conditions.
If the Fire Department is required to respond to an open fire which has become out of control, the person that initiated the fire is responsible for all costs associated with controlling and extinguishing the fire.
