Driven by her vision for a united Whitehorse that prioritizes the well-being of its residents, City of Whitehorse Councillor Mellisa Murray has announced her interest to run for the position of the Mayor of Whitehorse in the next election.
Mellisa Murray is a young female leader, second-generation Chinese Canadian, and mother of two biracial children who has called Whitehorse home. She has a lifelong commitment to the community, and brings a unique and diverse voice to the forefront of the mayoral race.
Murray’s announcement is following the announcement to run for the seat of the Mayor by councillor, Kirk Cameron.
In a press released statement, Murray said she is deeply rooted in the community and understands its needs and apirations. She said she Acknowledges that she lives on the traditional territories of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and that she aims to continue the City’s partnerships with the two First Nations.
Murray 's extensive experience includes working closely with Yukon First Nation communities, YFN development corporations, the broader business community and local NGOs. Her efforts have focused on supporting economic growth and fostering economic reconciliation, ensuring that all members of the community benefit from Whitehorse's prosperity.

According to Murray, “As a lifelong resident of Whitehorse, she said she is passionate about the city and its future." She added that she “believes in the power of community and collaboration." Together, we can build a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable community, she said.
Murray said representation matters which is why she is determined to inspire underrepresented community members and show that their voices can make a difference.
Some of Murray’s priorities include: building an environmentally conscious community to combat climate change, focusing on equity, diversity and inclusivity, supporting affordable housing and infrastructure development, building strong relationships with all levels of government, and the health and safety of all citizens.
In fall 2021, Murray won a council seat for the first time with 3,546 votes.
